Roof Collapse and Flood Damage Force Seattle Store to Close

A popular children’s clothing store in downtown Seattle requires major repairs after inclement weather caused serious flood damage. Overnight rain ripped the roof open, leaving a gaping hole that resulted in flood damage to the building.

Matters were made worse by a sprinkler pipe that broke during the collapse; it sent even more water rushing into the shop. Emergency workers and firefighters responded to a call reporting a broken sprinkler pipe on 1816 8th Avenue around midnight. They found the Flora and Henri store had suffered major flooding and a partial roof collapse.

The responders informed the owner of the issue, and firefighters helped her move office equipment, clothing and merchandise to a dry area. There was excessive water damage to the back of the store. Fortunately, valuables, computer systems and business records were safe from destruction, and the owner plans to restore her business.

What’s Next for the Flora and Henri?

Before the Flora and Henri can open its doors, building inspectors must declare the property safe. This may require extensive repairs and the help of a property restoration team.

Buildings reminds readers that flat roofs are prone to collecting water. As the roof begins to sag, the indentation catches rainwater and snow, which gradually weaken the roof.

This is known as “ponding,” and it is the primary cause of roof collapses. A ponding roof is extremely dangerous for anyone standing underneath it. Fortunately, the collapse at this store happened when nobody was inside.

Many roofs collapse each year due to inclement weather. One of the best steps you can take to avoid becoming a victim is scheduling yearly roof inspections.

If you have a flat roof, then a ponding pump can help remove standing water. However, this is a temporary measure that will not survive battering rain or heavy snow.

If your roof has suffered damage due to wind, snow, a tree collapse or heavy rain, call Allied Restoration Company at 425-458-5756. We will provide a free estimate for property renovations in Seattle.
